Softshell, windbreaker or padded
Softshell is water-repellent and breathable: the compromise for everyday mid-season use. A windbreaker is very light, packs down, and suits events. Padded jackets bring warmth but their quilting limits flat marking areas.

Marking technical fabric
Water-repellent fabrics reject ink: direct printing does not bond. Embroidery goes through the layers without glue or peel, and transfers adhere where ink fails. Watch out for lined jackets: through-embroidery requires access to the lining.
